Catastrophic Injuries from Botched Hysterectomies: Oregon Medical Malpractice

Botched Hysterectomy Surgery Can Cause Catastrophic Injuries and Even Wrongful Death Due to Oregon Medical Malpractice

A hysterectomy is one of the most common surgeries that a woman will encounter, with approximately one-third (1/3) of all women before the age of 60 undergoing one.  Generally, these surgery is safe too.  However, in the last six months or so there have been some horrifying tails of female reproductive surgeries going horribly wrong.  One woman undergoing a hysterectomy ended up with a severe infection due to damage to her intestines, and she required amputations of parts of both arms and legs due to a sepsis.  Another woman had her fallopian tube (part of her reproductive system which connects the ovaries to the uterus) removed, but damage to her intestines resulted in the amputation of both her hands and feet, and a partial bowel resection.

While generally safe, these instances of medical malpractice clearly highlight the obvious and dangerous complications that could arise and cause serious personal injuries.  Oregon medical malpractice causing severe damage and catastrophic injury from a botched hysterectomy is also common and can result in wrongful death.

What is a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a woman’s uterus.  Sometimes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and all or part of the cervix are also removed.  There may be many causes for this type of surgery, including cancer, uterine fibroids, uterine prolapse, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, or other conditions or painful symptoms.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.  The incisions are made on the abdomen and may be one large incision or a series of smaller, less invasive incisions known as laparoscopic surgery.

Dangers of a Hysterectomy

In both of the cases cited above, and in the many other cases caused by serious medical malpractice, a botched hysterectomy usually causes some type of damage to the intestines and nearby structures.  Because of this, the intestines may be caused to leak.  When that happens, bacteria and fecal matter can drain into the abdominal cavity.  These can cause serious infections to other organs inside of the cavity.

The longer this is allowed to occur, the worst the infection will be and the harder it will be to stop.  When the infection becomes too strong or infects the blood, it is likely to cause sepsis.  This can result in septic shock, which is when the body and organ systematically begin to fail due to the overwhelming amount of bacteria in the system.  This is why many victims require their limbs amputated, because the infection is going to work from the distal part of your body (furtherest from the center) towards the center.

Other dangers of hysterectomies include other common surgical errors or anesthesia errors.  Mistakes with incisions, improperly performing the procedure, damaging nerves or vessels, or failing to remove all of the tissue could also result in serious Oregon medical malpractice.
