Delays in Treatment Causing Serious Oregon Medical Malpractice

Delays in Treating Certain Medical Conditions Can be Oregon Medical Malpractice

When we go to the emergency department at our local hospital, or to our local urgent care facility, we expect to be seen promptly for the care we need.  Yes, these facilities do have a notoriously long wait sometimes.  But seriously injured people are triaged, or their condition is prioritized to the level that they need to be seen, and they get prompt medical care and treatment.  Whereas other patients, perhaps those with the flu such as the current epidemic, may be triaged a lot lower.

However, sometimes triage is not properly done.  Some patients coming into an emergency room may be mis-categorized.  This can be incredibly dangerous and even deadly because failing to properly treat a patient in a medical emergency can lead to his or her death.  Even if the patient survives the medical malpractice, the injuries may be catastrophic and result in the wrongful death of a patient due to this emergency room error.

There are certain injuries that are most likely to be improperly triaged and lead to catastrophic injuries.  These are likely due to Oregon medical malpractice.  These types of injuries are some of the following:

Heart attacks – We all know that a heart attack is a medical emergency.  However, some patients experience may have only subtle symptoms which only a trained and competent medical professional will recognize.  Even though an emergency department can be a busy place, medical professionals still must be competent enough to make these assessments.  When a patient who is having a heart attack is left to stay in the waiting room, it can be a death sentence.

Crushing Injuries – When a patient has a crushing injury, such as a crushed foot from a workplace accident, we may not believe it is a very serious or urgent medical emergency.  However, that is a huge mistake.  Crushing injuries are always triaged higher than other types of cases, absent obvious serious trauma like gunshot wounds or extreme blood loss.  This is because a crushing injury causes massive damage to the blood vessels and arteries in the extremity.  This means they will continue to hemorrhage until repaired.  If a patient is left to sit in an emergency room, even if the patient just has half of a hand crushed, it can result in his or her death very quickly.  If not his or her death, amputation is all but guaranteed at that point.

Stroke – A patient experience the classic signs of a stroke needs to be treated immediately.  Any delay in treating a stroke is just increasing the damage to the brain and other vital organs.  If a patient is neglected in the emergency room or if the patient is forgotten once he or she is brought into a bed, it can be fatal and result in catastrophic damage.

Aneurysm – An aneurysm is another medical emergency that must be immediately treated.  Even small delays can be fatal.  If there is any delay in getting the patient into the operating room and for treatment, that could be fatal and due to medical malpractice in the emergency department.
