Head Injuries Caused by Oregon Nursing Home Malpractice

Oregon Nursing Home Malpractice and Mistakes Causing Serious Head Injuries

Even though we put a lot of trust in our nursing homes and rehabilitation centers to protect our loved ones, and many times they do, they still can make serious and dangerous mistakes.  Because our loved one is particularly vulnerable and dependent on competent, medical care from nursing home professionals, some of these mistakes are particularly devastating.  One type of injury that can be the most divesting and lead to wrongful death or debilitating disability are head injuries.  These are injuries that effect a person’s entire body and likely will lead to his or her death, particularly if that person is already in a nursing home.

There are many different ways that a head injury could occur from Oregon nursing home malpractice.  These ways could be obvious or not apparent at all.  Nonetheless, these errors or mistakes are caused by the careless, reckless, or negligent errors of another and will bring about liability.  Some of the most common ways that head injuries are caused due to nursing home malpractice include the following:

Medication Errors – When medications are overdosed, even to the wrong patient, or not given when they should, head injuries can occur.  Some examples include when a patient is on blood thinners and the nursing home mistakenly doubles or triples the dose or administers the dose too many times in a day.  This can cause bleeding in the brain which result in brain damage, a very serious type of head injury.  By the same token, nursing home providers could give too little of a medication which could cause a head injury, such as failing to give blood pressure medications which result in high blood pressure which could cause an aneurysm to rupture in the brain.

Drops – A nursing home may need to physically lift a patient to a bed, for bathing, or to the restroom.  These lifts and supports are dangerous times because the patient is very unstable.  If the staff are not using proper technique, or there is inadequate staffing to assist with the lift, the nursing home may drop the patient.  This could result in a patient striking his or her head on the wall, floor, or an apparatus which could result in damaging head injuries.

Falls/Failure to Protect from a Fail Risk – Some patients are fall risks in that they have fallen or have symptoms or conditions that will promote falling.  This could be dizziness, leg injuries, or medications that make them fatigued.  When nursing homes fails to guard against the risk of them falling, such as placing mats down or bed alarms, it could be nursing home malpractice when a patient falls and sustains a head injury.
