Most Common Pediatric Malpractice Which Results in Catastrophic Injury: Oregon Medical Malpractice

Oregon Medical Malpractice Alert: Most Common Pediatric Malpractice and Errors Which Result in Catastrophic Injury

We trust healthcare providers with a lot, including our most cherished possession: Our children.  We rely on pediatricians and healthcare professionals to protect them, treat them with the proper care and healing we expect, and to ensure their continued health and wellbeing.  We hope that pediatricians will do everything in their power and skill to protect our loved ones from harm.

Unfortunately, this does not always happen.  Sometimes pediatricians fail to properly care for our newborns and children.  This could be through careless error, rushing, or medical malpractice.  Some common examples include failing to diagnose, medication errors, and birth injuries.  These mistakes to young children can cause serious personal injuries that are permanent and debilitating, and also deadly.

Common Pediatric Mistakes that are Usually Medical Malpractice and Usually Result in Catastrophic Injury

There are many different types of medical malpractice which can be caused by pediatric mistakes and result in catastrophic injury.  These include some of the following pediatric errors:

Birth injuries – Right from the start, pediatricians and family care practitioners delivering a baby can result in serious personal injuries to a newborn due to a birth injury.  Most of these injuries are due to hypoxic conditions, meaning the lack of oxygen.  This is usually due to umbilical cord ruptures, excessive contractions pressing on the umbilical cord, and delays in c-sections.  Also pulling on the baby being born can cause brachial plexus injuries to the shoulder which can be permanent nerve injuries.  Using forceps or a vacuum extractor can result in facial nerve injuries as well.  These are all catastrophic injuries because they can result in permanent injuries for the baby’s entire life, including disabling conditions such as cerebral palsy.

Failing to diagnose – One of the most common ways that a pediatrician commits medical malpractice is failing to diagnose a condition, usually cancer.  This can be something as simple as not referring an odd bump on a child’s back that is skin cancer, or something more complex as improperly handling a bone pain or lump which is a Ewing’s sarcoma.  Cancer misdiagnosis are likely to be the most common medical malpractice from a pediatrician.

Medication errorsMistakes in prescribing medication to a child can be fatal and cause catastrophic injury to a child.  This commonly includes overdosing, wrong medication, wrong patient, not confirming drug interactions, and failing to check allergies.  Medications and prescriptions are potent substances that are meant to illicit a response from the body.  When that response is the wrong one, it can be fatal.

Oregon Medical Malpractice Causing Serious Personal Injuries or Wrongful Death

Pediatric malpractice is not a very common type of malpractice, unless the pediatrician is also a family care practitioner that is involved with the labor and delivery process.  But overall, pediatric malpractice may not be obvious.  After all, kids are kids.  They are developing and sometimes that is out of the control of the physician.

But that does not meant the pediatrician properly handled your loved one’s case.  Nor is that a defense.  Because even though pediatric malpractice is very uncommon, when it does occur it is usually catastrophic and often fatal.  If our loved one has been seriously injured due to pediatric malpractice, please call Kuhlman Law, LLC to learn how we can help you.
